Neck pain can happen in the slightest of circumstances such as a quick look over your shoulder or waking up in the mornings with a stiff neck, causing pain with the slightest of movement. The pain can start at the back or side of your neck and reach down to the shoulder blades or into your arm.
How is Neck Pain Caused?
The neck is very similar to the lower back whereby seemingly small movements or stress can suddenly bring on a short stabbing pain out of nowhere. Even trying to look at the person next to you turns into a complicated exercise in movement. Although it seems that the sudden pain has come out of the blue, there is usually an underlying problem that has been building up over time.
Our bodies are complex structures that are susceptible to the wear and tear of daily stresses over time. They are also very adaptable to pain that comes up on an occasional basis and this is where the danger lies. We may ignore the symptoms and not always notice that an underlying dysfunction has been building up over time.
What is Whiplash?
When the neck is injured by a sudden movement of the head, it is referred to as “whiplash”. A whiplash can occur as a sporting injury, accident in the workplace or as most commonly known, as a result of a car accident. An impact or collision causes the head to suddenly jerk back and forth beyond its normal limits.
The symptoms of whiplash may include headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, pain in the shoulder, arms or hands, reduced ability to turn and bend, and even low back and leg problems. These symptoms may appear immediately following an accident or as much as 2 weeks later.
Since injuries following a motor vehicle accident tend to affect many different tissues, a multi-pronged treatment program is often necessary to achieve full recovery.
Chiropractic Adjustments for Neck Pain
Chiropractic Adjustments return joints to their proper motion and position allowing your body to regain its lost function. This often relieves pain caused by inflammation trapped within the joints and reduces strain on tight, fatigued and spasmed muscles. Chiropractic adjustments are also effective in reducing pressure on “pinched” nerves and joint irritation often associated with headaches.
