Individualized Care Following a Car Accident
Core Wellness Centre, 726 St Clair Ave W, York ON M6C 1B3
Symptoms following a collision may begin immediately or become noticeable later. An assessment can help identify your current symptoms, functional concerns and whether clinic care or another referral may be appropriate.
All new patients first meet with Clinic Director Dr. Kris Dorken, DC. He reviews your health history, the circumstances of the collision, your symptoms, available medical information and your goals.
Dr. Kris Dorken, DC, is registered as a chiropractor in Ontario and is a member of the College of Chiropractors of Ontario.
If care from another clinic practitioner is appropriate, that practitioner will complete their own profession-specific assessment and consent process.

When should you get medical care first?
Core Wellness Centre is not an emergency clinic. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if you have any of the following after a collision:
- Loss of consciousness, confusion or a seizure
- A severe or worsening headache, repeated vomiting or unusual drowsiness
- New weakness, numbness, loss of coordination or trouble speaking
- Chest pain or difficulty breathing
- New changes in bladder or bowel control
- Severe neck pain after a high-impact collision
If you’re unsure, see your family doctor or call Health811 first.
At Core Wellness Centre in Toronto, we are dedicated to helping patients recover from a variety of symptoms often linked to car accidents, including whiplash, headaches, neck pain and stiffness, back pain, numbness or tingling.
What symptoms are common after a car accident?
Symptoms vary widely and may not appear right away. People commonly report:
- Neck pain and stiffness, including whiplash-associated symptoms
- Back and shoulder pain or muscle spasms; see why your back may hurt after a car accident
- Headaches
- Numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or legs
- Dizziness or balance changes
- General muscle and joint soreness
Headaches, dizziness, numbness and weakness can have causes that need medical investigation, so we screen for these at your assessment. Our guide to common symptoms after a car accident explains them in more detail, and whiplash vs. concussion covers how to tell the two apart.
The following symptoms can have different causes. Listing a symptom does not mean that a specific diagnosis or clinic treatment applies.
Back and Shoulder Symptoms
Neck Pain and Stiffness
Headaches or Migraines

Some people experience discomfort, stiffness or restricted movement in the back or shoulder area following a collision. An assessment considers the location, severity and effect on daily activity.
Neck pain, stiffness and restricted movement may occur after a sudden movement of the head and neck. The practitioner will assess your symptoms before discussing care options.
Headaches can have many causes. New, severe, persistent or worsening headaches should receive appropriate medical attention.
Numbness, Tingling or Weakness
Dizziness or Balance Changes
Muscle and Joint Concerns

Numbness, tingling or weakness may require further medical assessment. Seek urgent medical assistance for sudden or rapidly worsening symptoms.
Dizziness and balance changes can have different causes and may require medical investigation. Seek prompt medical assessment if these symptoms are new, severe or worsening.
A collision may be followed by muscle soreness, joint discomfort or difficulty with certain movements. The responsible practitioner will assess whether the concern falls within their professional scope.
What happens at your first assessment?
Your first visit is about understanding your injury, not rushing into treatment.
Dr. Kris will ask about:
- How the collision happened and when your symptoms began
- Your health history, medications and any previous injuries
- Care you’ve received since the accident and any medical reports
- Daily activities, work or sports that are now harder
- Your goals for recovery
He will then examine the areas involved and explain what he found and what your options are. Your first visit may not include treatment if more information, imaging, medical clearance or a referral is needed first.
Do you need an X-ray after a car accident?
Not always. Imaging is recommended only when it may answer a specific clinical question, such as ruling out a fracture. Many soft tissue injuries don’t show on X-ray, so a normal X-ray doesn’t mean nothing is wrong. When imaging is needed, we will explain why and arrange it or refer you.
How do accident benefits and direct billing work?
In Ontario, your auto insurance policy includes medical and rehabilitation benefits through the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS). Since July 1, 2026, auto insurance pays first for treatment after a collision, ahead of workplace or private health plans, except for medication.
Coverage depends on your insurer, your policy and your claim. Many soft tissue injuries, such as sprains, strains and whiplash, fall under the Minor Injury Guideline, which currently has a $3,500 limit for treatment.
Our guide to Ontario accident benefits (SABS) explains the process step by step.
We offer direct billing to many auto insurers for eligible claims and help prepare the treatment plan forms insurers require.
Direct billing does not guarantee approval: your insurer decides what is covered. We will tell you about any fees you may owe before treatment and we are happy to facilitate claims on your behalf.
Services That May Be Considered
Care is based on your assessment, and you won’t automatically need more than one practitioner.
Each regulated professional works within their own scope of practice, and with your consent they share information to coordinate your care.
A care plan depends on your assessment findings, needs and insurer requirements.
Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care after an accident may include education, exercise guidance, soft tissue techniques, joint mobilization and spinal adjustments.
Adjustments may be manual, using controlled movement of a joint, or Activator-assisted, using a handheld tool that delivers a low-force impulse.
Cold Laser Therapy (LLLT)
Cold laser therapy, also called low-level laser therapy, uses light energy applied to the skin, to deliver light energy to the body’s tissues to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes at the cellular level.
Cold laser therapy may be considered along side a broader care plan when appropriate for the assessed concern.
Spinal Decompression & Y-Strap
Spinal decompression and Y-Strap adjustments apply traction along the spine. They aren’t suitable for everyone, especially soon after an injury, and are only considered after assessment.
Before any treatment, your practitioner will explain the expected benefits, the risks and the alternatives so you can give informed consent. You can ask questions or change your mind at any time.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy focuses on restoring movement, strength and function through exercise, manual therapy and education, with a plan to help you return to work and daily activities.
A physiotherapy plan may include education, personalized exercises to complete at home, manual therapy and modalities where appropriate.
Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy delivers acoustic pressure waves to targeted tissue to promote rapid tissue repair and pain relief and is most often used for persistent tendon problems.
Shockwave therapy may be discussed for selected musculoskeletal concerns. Its suitability depends on the practitioner’s assessment, the stage of the concern and relevant health information.
Registered Massage Therapy
Registered massage therapy (RMT) can help ease muscle tension and soreness, and is often used alongside exercise-based care.
Your registered massage therapist assesses muscle tension, discomfort and movement, and adjusts techniques to your comfort and response. Before treatment, they review your health history and goals with you.

When to Seek an Assessment
If you experience neck or back pain, headaches, dizziness, numbness, tingling or other new symptoms following a car accident, seek assessment from an appropriate healthcare provider. These symptoms can have different causes, and the appropriate next step depends on your individual circumstances.
For non-emergency muscle, joint or movement concerns, you can request an initial assessment at Core Wellness Centre.
Seek urgent medical care for symptoms that are sudden, severe or rapidly worsening. Core Wellness Centre is not an emergency facility.
What to Expect from Your Care
Your care plan will depend on your assessment and may change as your symptoms, function or goals change.
Your practitioner will monitor your response, complete reassessments when required and discuss whether care should continue, change or conclude. Referral to another healthcare provider may be recommended when a concern falls outside the practitioner’s scope.
Care outcomes vary. No particular result or recovery timeline can be guaranteed.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions
What happens at my first appointment after a car accident?
Dr. Kris will review your health history, symptoms, the circumstances of the collision and available reports. He will discuss whether a chiropractic assessment, another clinic service or an outside referral may be appropriate.
Should I see a chiropractor after a car accident?
Chiropractic care may be appropriate for some muscle, joint and movement concerns after a collision, but not for every injury. An assessment shows whether it suits you or whether another practitioner or a referral is a better fit.
What should I bring to the appointment?
Bring your claim number, insurance company information, adjuster contact information and any relevant medical or imaging reports. Also bring any forms supplied by your insurer.
Do you bill automobile insurers directly?
Direct billing may be available for eligible claims. The clinic must have the required claim information, and the insurer must approve the applicable expenses. Direct billing is not a guarantee of coverage or payment.
Does auto insurance cover chiropractic and physiotherapy?
Most Ontario auto policies include medical and rehabilitation benefits, but coverage depends on your insurer and claim. We’ll help you understand the process, and your insurer makes the final decision.
Does the clinic manage my entire insurance claim?
The clinic can assist with healthcare documents and eligible billing connected with services provided at the clinic. Questions about claim eligibility, legal rights or coverage decisions should be directed to your insurer or an appropriate independent adviser.
Which services will I receive?
Services are not selected before an assessment. The recommended approach depends on your symptoms, findings, needs, practitioner scope and any applicable insurer requirements.
How soon should I arrange an assessment?
Report the collision to your insurer promptly and seek appropriate medical assistance based on your symptoms. Contact the clinic when you have the basic claim information or if you need help understanding what information is required for booking.
What if the collision happened several months ago?
You may contact the clinic to discuss an assessment. Insurance eligibility and approval depend on the individual claim, policy and insurer decision.
How many appointments will I need?
There is no set number. It depends on your injury, your progress and your goals, and we reassess as we go.
When should I seek emergency assistance?
Core Wellness Centre is not an emergency clinic. Call 911 or seek emergency medical care for severe, sudden or rapidly worsening symptoms.
