Pain in the lower back can be a debilitating problem, and often times pinpointing the cause of this pain can be a real challenge for medical professionals. There are a number of different conditions that can cause pain in a person’s lower back, some having to do with specific medical conditions or injuries that an individual may have sustained during their life. Another one of the typical causes of lower back pain is the overuse of joints, muscles, and ligaments in the back due to work related stress, athletics, or any number of other activities that can pose a risk of overuse to your lower back. For the benefit of those individuals who tend to suffer from pain in their lower back, some of the common causes and conditions that can trigger lower back pain will now be discussed briefly.
Lower Back Pain Symptoms
When suffering from pain in the lower back, there are a number of common symptoms that can be used to tell what a specific individual might be dealing with. Difficulty standing or walking due to lower back pain is a typical symptom, as well as pains that tend to be achy or dull. Muscle spasms are also a potential symptom of lower back pain; these spasms can range from being mild, to very severe. For this reason, it is a wise decision to consult with your doctor if you are experiencing these types of muscle spasms in your lower back.
Herniated Discs as a Cause of Lower Back Pain
A herniated disc in a person’s spine can often be the cause of lower back pain. A herniated disc can be brought on by a number of activities, including heavy lifting, athletics, or any number of other strenuous activities that are known to put extreme pressures on the spine.
Spondylolisthesis as a Cause of Lower Back Pain
Spondylolisthesis is a defect that some individuals suffer from, which causes one vertebra to be able to slide over another one. This is a spinal deformity that tends to be a rarer cause of lower back pains, but it certainly can account for some of the instances of pain suffered in the lower back region. This is a defect that may require some sort of surgery or other treatment to correct or at least alleviate the pain imposed by this condition.
A compression fracture can take place in the spine even when relatively light forces are applied to the back and spine. These kinds of spinal fractures are relatively common among certain athletes, such as gymnasts, but can also be found in older people as well since their older bodies can take only so much pressure before a compression fracture could take place.
Bacterial Infection in the Spine as a Cause of Lower Back Pain
One of the much more rare causes of lower back pain in individuals is a bacterial infection in the spine. These infections are usually transported to the spine via the bloodstream, and can cause some of the debilitating lower back pain that some people suffer from in their daily lives.
