Chiropractic Assessment Following a Car Accident

Symptoms following a collision may begin immediately or become noticeable later. An assessment can help identify your current concerns, how they affect your activities and whether chiropractic care or another type of care may be appropriate.

People may seek an assessment for concerns such as:

  • Neck pain or stiffness.
  • Back pain or restricted movement.
  • Shoulder or joint discomfort.
  • Muscle soreness.
  • Whiplash-associated neck symptoms.
  • Difficulty with sitting, walking, lifting or other activities.
  • Difficulty returning to work, exercise or usual routines.

Headaches, dizziness, numbness, tingling or weakness can have different causes and may require medical investigation. Tell Dr. Kris about all new or changing symptoms.

Listing a symptom does not mean that chiropractic care is suitable or that a specific injury is present. Recommendations follow an individual assessment.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Core Wellness Centre is not an emergency facility.

Call 911 or seek emergency medical care after a collision if you experience:

  • Loss of consciousness or difficulty staying awake.
  • A seizure.
  • New problems with speaking, walking, vision or balance.
  • New weakness or numbness.
  • Severe or rapidly worsening pain.
  • Chest pain or difficulty breathing.
  • New bladder or bowel changes.
  • Loss of feeling around the groin or buttocks.
  • Weakness or numbness affecting both legs.

Seek prompt medical advice for new, severe, persistent or worsening headaches, dizziness, vomiting, confusion or other symptoms following a head injury.

Do not use online booking, email or a website form to request emergency assistance.

Your Initial Assessment With Dr. Kris

Dr. Kris will ask about:

  • How and when the collision occurred.
  • Your current symptoms.
  • Your health history and medications.
  • Previous injuries or related conditions.
  • Medical care received since the collision.
  • Relevant reports or imaging.
  • Activities affected by your symptoms.
  • Your needs and goals.

He will complete a chiropractic examination appropriate to your presentation. This may include an assessment of movement, range of motion, posture, joint function and other clinically appropriate measures.

Not every patient requires the same tests or procedures.

Dr. Kris will explain his findings in understandable language. He will discuss whether chiropractic care may be appropriate, what other options are available and whether referral to another healthcare professional should be considered.

Your first appointment may not include treatment if further information, medical clearance, imaging or referral is required.

Chiropractic Care Options

If chiropractic care is appropriate, Dr. Kris will recommend an approach based on your assessment findings, health information, comfort, preferences and goals.

Care may include:

  • Education about symptoms and suitable activity.
  • Personalized movement or exercise recommendations.
  • Soft-tissue techniques.
  • Joint mobilization.
  • Manual chiropractic adjustments.
  • Activator-assisted adjustments.
  • Other chiropractic options when clinically appropriate.

No technique is appropriate for every patient or every injury.

Before care begins, Dr. Kris will explain the proposed approach, expected benefits, material risks and available alternatives. You will have an opportunity to ask questions before providing consent.

Manual and Activator-Assisted Adjustments

A manual chiropractic adjustment involves applying controlled movement or force to a particular joint.

The Activator is a handheld instrument that delivers a controlled, low-force impulse to a targeted area. It may be considered when Dr. Kris determines that an instrument-assisted approach is appropriate.

The technique selected depends on the assessment findings and the patient’s needs, comfort and preferences. An adjustment is not automatically included in every appointment.

Y-Strap and Spinal Decompression Options

When clinically appropriate, Dr. Kris may discuss Y-strap techniques or non-surgical spinal decompression as possible components of a chiropractic care plan.

The Y-strap applies controlled traction along the spine. Spinal decompression uses specialized equipment to apply traction.

These options are not suitable for every person, symptom or injury. Dr. Kris will review relevant health information, explain why an option is being considered and discuss available alternatives before proceeding.

Are X-Rays Required?

X-rays are not required for every patient following a car accident.

After reviewing your history and completing an examination, Dr. Kris may recommend imaging when it is clinically indicated and may help answer a specific diagnostic or care-planning question.

He will explain the reason for the recommendation, along with relevant benefits and limitations. Some injuries and soft-tissue concerns are not visible on an X-ray and may require a different type of medical investigation.

Other Services at Core Wellness Centre

Some patients may benefit from another clinic service. You do not automatically need care from more than one practitioner.

If another service is appropriate, that practitioner will complete the assessment required for their profession, explain their recommendations and obtain your informed consent.

Physiotherapy

A physiotherapist assesses symptoms, movement and functional concerns. When appropriate, physiotherapy may include education, personalized exercises, activity guidance and hands-on techniques.

Motor Vehicle Accident Claims and Billing

The clinic may help explain the healthcare documentation it requires and may submit eligible treatment plans or invoices through the applicable insurance process.

Coverage, approval, reimbursement limits and payment depend on the insurer, the available benefits and the individual claim. The clinic cannot guarantee that an insurer will approve treatment or pay an expense.

Contact your automobile insurer promptly after a collision. Ask what information and forms are required to start your claim.

Before treatment begins, ask the clinic about:

  • Information needed for your appointment.

  • Treatment-plan or insurer requirements.

  • Available billing arrangements.

  • Fees that may remain your responsibility.

  • How rejected or partially paid claims are handled.

Direct billing does not guarantee coverage or remove the patient’s responsibility for unpaid fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I see a chiropractor after a car accident?

Chiropractic assessment may be appropriate for certain muscle, joint and movement concerns following a collision. It is not suitable for every symptom or injury.

Seek emergency or prompt medical attention when symptoms suggest a serious injury. Dr. Kris will assess whether chiropractic care, another clinic service or medical referral may be appropriate.

Can chiropractic care help with whiplash-associated symptoms?

Some people report neck pain, stiffness, headaches or restricted movement following a sudden movement of the head and neck.

These symptoms can have different causes. Dr. Kris will complete an assessment before determining whether chiropractic care may be appropriate or whether further medical evaluation is needed.

How soon should I book an assessment?

Seek emergency or urgent medical care first when required.

For non-emergency muscle, joint or movement concerns, contact the clinic to discuss appointment availability. The appropriate timing depends on your symptoms, medical advice and individual circumstances.

Will I receive treatment during my first appointment?

Not necessarily. The first appointment focuses on understanding your symptoms and determining appropriate next steps.

Treatment may be discussed when chiropractic care is suitable and you have provided informed consent. Further medical information, imaging, clearance or referral may be required first.

Will I need an X-ray?

Not every patient requires an X-ray. Dr. Kris may recommend imaging when the history and examination indicate that it could help answer a specific clinical question.

The reason, benefits and limitations will be explained before imaging is completed.

Can I receive chiropractic care and physiotherapy?

Both may be appropriate for some patients, but you do not automatically need both.

Each practitioner completes a profession-specific assessment and makes recommendations within their scope. Where care is coordinated, relevant information may be shared with your consent.

Does automobile insurance cover chiropractic care?

Eligible chiropractic expenses may be covered through applicable motor vehicle accident benefits. Coverage and approval depend on the insurer, available benefits, required documentation and individual claim.

Confirm the requirements with your insurer and the clinic before treatment.

Does the clinic provide direct billing?

Direct billing may be available for eligible claims. It does not guarantee that the insurer will approve or pay the full amount.

Ask the clinic about its billing procedures and any fees that may remain your responsibility.

How many appointments will I need?

There is no fixed number that suits every patient.

Dr. Kris will discuss recommendations based on your assessment findings, needs and goals. Your response to care may be reviewed so the plan can continue, change or conclude when appropriate.

Do I need a medical referral?

A medical referral is generally not required to book a chiropractic appointment in Ontario.

An insurer may require particular forms, medical information or approval for payment. Contact your insurer to confirm the requirements of your claim.
